I am beginning my 3rd year of sand sculpting and live in Plattsville, Ontario. I had no idea that the world of sand sculpting even existed until I happened to be vacationing in Fort Myers Florida. While visiting my wife’s parents who encouraged me to go and check out the American Sand Sculpting Championships which was about a 5 minute walk from their condo. The first thing I saw when I walked into the festival was a sand sculpture of a large book standing on end with the pages open and a very detailed pirate ship sailing out of the middle of the book. I could not believe you could do things like that with sand and I was immediately hooked. I bought a beginner’s book and some sand sculpting tools from Amazing Walter and then did nothing with them for about 10 years. I was too busy coaching my sons in their sports and taking them to their activities to get to a beach and start practicing. When my last son finished his football career at the University I finally had time to go to the beach and start figuring out the wonderful world of sand sculpting. When I got confident enough, I got up the nerve to go and enter a competition. I am thoroughly enjoying meeting so many wonderful people when I am at the beach practicing or competing in Sand Festivals.
